7th Overall At Radial Worlds

July 14th, 2010
Largs, Scotland

The Laser Radial Worlds ended today with no racing, and Finland's Sari Mutala successfully defending her World Championship title over Netherlands' Marit Bouwmeester.  My USSTAG team mate Paige Railey ended up tied for 3rd, winning the tie breaker.  I managed to rally back to a 7th place overall.

Sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate!  That was the story of this event.  After two days of good conditions at the beginning of the regatta, the last four days were not so great.  With only 6 races completed in the whole regatta (four of them in the first two days), it was a short event for a world championships which made every race very important.

Unfortunately after yesterday's no wind, we were greeted this morning with  winds averaging 27kts, gusting up to 39kts.  Throughout the day, the wind fluctuated up and down between 25 and 40kts.  There were times when, in front of the club house, it looked like it would be promising to go out, and just as we all started to get excited about the prospect of going sailing, the wind would pick back up again.  So racing was called off at 2:45pm and we hurriedly packed up our boats and gave them back to Laser Performance (we had to use chartered boats for the event).

Overall I'm happy with a 7th place, especially considering my two races on  the second day, but I'm annoyed with myself for getting those results.  It was a silly mistake to make, but goes to prove what I've been told so many times before, that winning early is important because you never know what might happen at the end of an event.  I would like to say congrats to Sari, Marit and Paige, though, who all sailed a very good event and deserved to be up on the podium.  You can check out the
full results on the regatta website.

Despite today being a no-sailing day, there was one bit of good news, our match race team received an email  informing us that we had received a spot for the
Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, the last regatta on the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit. We were very relieved to receive a spot and are looking forward to getting back to training after our break. The next couple of months are leading up to our match racing World Championships, so we will be focusing a lot of time and energy on preparing for those.

Tomorrow I'm off home.  It's been almost 6 weeks since I left, so I'm  looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and cooking in my own kitchen.  Next will be some training with the team as we get ready for our upcoming events.

We would like to thank
Carmeuse and Trinity Yachts for their continued  support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympics in London.  We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their support.

Sail Hard,

Anna
